Last year marked the 25th anniversary of the much loved Newburyport Holiday Home Tour. This year with changes at the Custom House, new sponsors were being courted and the event was almost called off. Luckily, the AJH Aid Association stepped in and will host its first Holiday House Tour on Saturday, December 14th.
This year has been eventful for the Custom House, which was officially turned over to the Newburyport Maritime Society and hired a new executive director (Joan Whitlow) earlier this month. Custom House board Chair Doug Muir said that by putting the house tour in new hands, the museum staff hopes to refocus its energy. This will include updating the museum, bringing tall ships to the waterfront, and hosting other maritime-themed events. “We have a lot of stuff on our plate right now,” Muir said. “We’ve been doing this for so long, and as a maritime museum, we want to focus most of our energy on maritime history…this is a good time to involve other people.”
Enjoy a rare glimpse into greater Newburyport’s finest private residences and unique spaces, all dressed in holiday green. The tour leads you on a journey through four centuries of Newburyport’s rich history and culture. There is always a nice mix of the stately homes on High Street, smaller historically significant structures, modern maritime dwellings, and sometimes beautiful farms on our outer borders. In the past this has included the NEER (New England Equine Rescue) facility in West Newbury, and even artistic loft spaces outside the Governor’s Academy.
Each home is decked out in holiday style reflecting the homeowner’s individual celebration and traditions of the season. This is a great event to experience with friends or family members, moms and grandmothers. Come and experience a day full of holiday magic and surprise!
