Are you living a balanced life?
What does the word balance mean to you anyway? Do you conjure up an image of a tight rope walker at the circus when you hear it?
Balance is certainly tough to find in our hectic modern lifestyle.
Traditionally, balance is divided into 3 areas: Mental Balance, Physical balance and Spiritual Balance. I’d like to add a 3A: Moral Balance-all right it could be part of Spiritual-but hey, I’m trying to impress you here!
Mental Balance
Mental Balance is basically challenging your mind. Many of us get this at work-maybe too much! For those of us who don’t there’s sodoku, crossword puzzles, reading and games. Not head games-board games, cards, stuff like that. I play them with my twin girls all the time. The best part is-because its fun, they don’t know that they are getting smarter just by doing it!
Physical Balance
Physical Balance is challenging yourself physically everyday with activity. You don’t have to run a marathon-just get moving-walk, jog, carry groceries a few extra feet. And sorry to disappoint you but tv is the opposite of activity.
Spiritual Balance
Spiritual balance is basically your guiding force (yeah okay like Star Wars and the force being with you and all that). This could be God or gods, the universe or a totem pole (my personal favorite). Do you pay attention to them (or it), or spend some time thinking about them (or it)?
Moral Balance
My 3A is moral balance-good ol’ “do unto others’ aka “the golden rule.” At the end of the day, are you proud of yourself? Have you done things you believe in? A good way to test this: Who is your biggest role model? Have you done things that would impress him or her?
While each of should strive for balance in our lives, a few things are important to remember along the way. The first is that “Rome was not built in a day.” No, I did not make this saying up. It means work your way up slowly to achieve your goals. Nothing worth doing is done quickly-okay I sort of made that one up! When I started doing pushups (to compete with a friend of mine)I could do 5. Now I can do 300. Guess what-my biggest ally was time! Speaking of time, true balance takes time and guess what, you have the time. Most things that I’m talking about here take very little time. If you are even mildly organized, you can easily make time to be balanced-believe me, with twin girls, I’m in that category!
