It is with tired legs and an exhausted yet satisfied smile that I sit here in the passenger seat of our minivan en route back to Newburyport. We are heading south on 91 after a long and glorious weekend at Jay Peak in Vermont.
Every year a motley crew of Newburyporters heads up for four days of skiing, boarding, waterparking, and in my case, Poutine-ing (three servings worth) at Jay Peak.
The Newburyport Ski Club headed by resident, Jamie Chabot, has given the Kinsey family, and numerous others, a trip that serves as one of the highlights of the year. My kids swear it is the only place that rivals Disney World and for this Mickey Mouse-loving family, that is saying a lot.
This group also finds itself riding the waves of the Seacoast of New Hampshire a lot too.
In both locations you will find kids and their adventure-seeking parents in various states of instruction as they teach their kids to embrace all the benefits of where they live….a hop, skip, and a jump to the mountains and to the beaches. Basements full of wetsuits, ski boots, and snow boards, you name it.
This brings me to my primary reason for not curling up like a cat and napping on the ride home and instead reflecting on the fabulous weekend….’cause we live a seriously amazing region of the country!
Newburyport not only makes us feel like we have traveled back through centuries to a time when George Washington was strolling the streets. It not only allows us to remain lazy about finding new out of town restaurants (because we have great ones right downtown) … it is one of the few places where, if you are insane like my husband, you could effectively surf and snowboard on the very same day and be back at the Port Tavern by happy hour.
So, before I succumb to the sun coming into my car window and doze off while leaving the driving and the disciplining of our three sons in the back of said minivan to my husband, I want to give thanks.
Thanks to Jamie and the Newburyport Ski and Snowboard Club for organizing the weekend…..thanks to a mountain that is rugged and unforgiving…..thanks to all the families there who add to the fun….thanks to the fries, cheese curd, and gravy that makes every après-ski a satisfying experience….and thanks to the fact we call Newburyport home and that these adventures are at our fingertips.
