“Theriault, a 21-year-old college junior studying abroad since January, was seriously injured May 12 in a van accident on a rural highway outside Turangi, New Zealand, that killed three of her Boston University classmates. After undergoing a six-hour brain surgery last week, Theriault, who suffered a serious head injury, broken right arm and grazing to her body, is now reportedly breathing on her own, and her condition was upgraded from critical to serious.
The promising news was cause for hope and has left Theriault’s family, friends and former classmates and teachers feeling cautiously optimistic about the future for the young woman they describe as an old soul with a quick sense of humor and a yearning to experience all life has to offer. That network of concerned supporters is now directing its efforts to raising funds so Theriault’s parents, Todd and Deb Theriault of Salisbury, who flew to New Zealand following the accident, can afford to remain by her bedside without worrying about finances.
Tomorrow, the first planned fundraiser will be held at Agav in downtown Newburyport, where Theriault worked as a hostess during high school.”
